Chosen Answer:

google Norton removal tool, make sure you get it from the Norton/ Symantec link. Run the tool then restart your computer, then run it again and restart. You should be good to go.
They do, they have it at my school and I just wanted to ask before I fuck up the scvhool pc’s. lol

Chosen Answer:

How did you get your hands on Sophos I thought they only deal with
business people? I think antivirus 2008 will win. Most of these Anti-Virus programs all suck at detecting and removing Vundo Trojans.

Download Malwarebytes or Superantispyware. I’ll bet my money that one of these programs will detect and remove antivirus 2008

I have a problem with windows installer / uninstaller – I was trying to install sophos antivirus and it all hung up because it didn’t want me to have a pdf file open at the same time. When I closed the pdf, the program appeared but didn’t work. When I tried to reinstall it or uninstall whatever was there using the control panel add/ remove programs, I get an error 1721 message which related to windows installer service. Microsoft’s website says to do a msiexec/unregister, msiexec/regserver procedure. When I do this I get an error message ‘an event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers’.

It seems I need to repair the windows XP installation. When I put in my installation disc (it’s the original, legal CD) it refuses saying that it is an older version. I’ve had it for a while and have uploaded SP1 and SP2 and all the updates over the years over the network.
Do I boot up on the CD and do a full reinstallation and spend hours updating SP1,2 etc? Is there a better way? Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Probably because you have upgraded to SP2 it doesn’t recognise the old version.

try Start > Run and type sfc /scannow

this should scan windows files to make sure they are intact however it may need the XP disk too.

You may have to spend hours updating windows. You only need to put on SP2 as it contains the SP1 updates too. You can download SP2 before you reinstall from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

If you want to try something a bit more advanced to make things a bit easier you can make a new instalation CD which is slipstreamed with SP2

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_slipstream.htm

these will show you how to make a slipstreamed CD. This is legal as long as it is for your own use.

Hi, out of the blue my internet on my Mac stopped working. Here’s some information. My internet is not the thing that is wrong (it works on other computers around my house). Even when I plug my Mac into the router with an Ethernet cable it still does not work. My Mac also displays that it is connected to the internet however it does not load any webpage. I have checked the connection and the funny thing is that my ip address that my Mac displays when connected is wrong. I think this might mean that I have a virus but I am not sure. I tried using Sophos however it is taking forever (like all night and its 5 percent done). Is there any way I can fix this!!! Please help!!! \

Thanks in advance all help is appreciated!

Chosen Answer:

I don’t know enough about Macs to know if that’s a symptom of a virus. Others have made good suggestions, like resetting your router, but if that doesn’t work and your Internet is connected however just slow… Perhaps you might need to clear your cache or clean up other files? Cycle your Mac through the Washing Machine!

1 – let’s say I knowingly downloaded malware/spyware thinking that it was a useful program… would a good anti-virus software still detect this as malware – by noticing suspicious behaviour – even though I had given permission for it to download?

2 – Is it possible that such a download could have made changes to my anti-virus program such that my anti-virus program will no longer be able to detect that malware?

I don’t actually think that I have done this…. but it is vital that i get any malware that might be on my computer off…. so I am just convering all bases.

Sophos scans and a 2nd scan from the free microsoft safety scanner have turned up nothing…. but i am still paranoid. I have a computer, not a Mac…. so I might try malwarebytes later too.

thank you
it is not a mac. i use windows
even though sophos might now be great on windows, what is your opinion on the 2 questions above?

Chosen Answer:

HELLOOOO, What OS are you using? If Mac OSx, then don’t worry, Sophos has you covered…
If windows, then you need good protection…

Chosen Answer:

YAY! Someone else caught this damn virus!

And, luckily enough, i know how to remove it!

Click start, run, type msconfig, hit enter. Look under start up or services. find the process that has the same name as the virus. Uncheck it. Download USBfix, a quick google should find it. Fun it, and then restart your computer, with the usb connected, run it again, restart, run one more time. That should clean it out.

Hope i helped.

This is all on Vista Home Basic with Sophos Antivirus. And please, no Vista commentary–I know, I know….

Sophos indicates that c:/Windows/System32/msqpdxcyxitcee.dll is a virus…specifically, “Mal/FakeVirPack-A”. Sophos gives a “Clean-up failed” message. The file doesn’t show in Explorer, and if I try to access it in Command Prompt, I get an “Access Denied” message. I tried to deregister it with RecSvr32, but the file “failed to load.” Also, I don’t want to outright delete the file, in case the malicious code is actually embedded in an otherwise safe DLL.

Any ideas?

Just check in Task Manager if there is a process named MS BLAST .EXE going on in the background.
I remember in my machine this was causing a problem (but this was long back!!!). I am not sure if this virus is still around but no harm in checking. If it is there, just downlaod a patch from Microsoft Website and hopefully it will be taken care of

Chosen Answer:

well first you need a backup device , like an external drive with will be better than backing up in dvds. now there are certain free back up software for it , the other way around is to make and image of your drive , and the last one , are the software original or copied or what , cause it depends on the software you install too.
